Chapter 12: Item Six
We held the war council on Wednesday night at the lake cabin, around a table made from a cable spool.
Rhonda chaired it.
She had brought her bingo markers, two legal pads, and a pot roast, and she handed out jobs.
"Becca, you've got the Lodge. Kent, you've got your daddy. Carrie, you've got the face."
"What face?"
"The one you made at the compliance lady. I want that face on Friday."
Becca laughed so hard she had to put down her fork.
She had walked in an hour earlier carrying her father's reading glasses and a manila folder, in a Lodge sweatshirt that said NOLTE VOLUNTEER, and she'd asked to be put to work.
Nobody had made her say sorry.
Eli had decided she was the funniest grown-up in the county and was sitting on her feet.
"Here's what I have," Becca said.
She opened the folder.
"The Lodge phone bill for the month. My father pays it. I signed for the mail on Monday." She slid a page across. "Look at the fourth line."
The call had been placed on Monday at 4:12 p.m., from the Auxiliary extension.
It lasted twelve minutes.
The number it called belonged to the county's Child Protective Services intake desk.
"That's her," I said. "That's her office."
"She has the only key to that room."
"Does your father know?"
"He knows I'm here." Becca's mouth went thin. "He's been taking calls about Kent all week. He says it's Lodge business and he'd rather I left it alone, and I said Daddy, I did leave it alone, for four months, and look where that got me."
"Six weeks," Kent said.
"It felt like four months."
That got a laugh from everyone, even Kent's father, who sat at the end of the table cleaning his glasses on his shirt.
