Chapter 11: Two Brothers
"Leif's on a call-out until morning," Erik said. "The substation. He won't be back."
Kenji looked up from the stove.
It was Monday night, almost ten.
He was making a pot of miso soup because the weather had turned, and the whole house smelled of wet wool.
Erik stood in the kitchen doorway with his glasses in one hand and his hair standing on end.
"I said I'd tell you," he said. "About the notebook. I thought I'd do it tonight."
"Okay."
"And I can't do it until I've said the other thing again, so that it counts," Erik said.
"What other thing?"
Erik crossed the room in three strides.
He took the spoon out of Kenji's hand and set it in the sink, and turned off the burner.
Then he took Kenji's face in both hands.
His fingers were shaking.
"I love you," he said. "I said it in the closet and I ran. It wasn't a mistake. It wasn't a thing that happened to me. I love you, and I'd say it to Tilda, and I'd say it in the kitchen at breakfast if I could get through it."
"Erik."
"You don't have to say it back."
"I know." Kenji put his hands over Erik's. "I heard you the first time. I'm just not good at it yet. I'm saying that I heard."
