Chapter 13: Locked In

Camille's POV

My father said nothing in the car.

On the bridge he had told Nolan he was welcome in the front row on Saturday, and Nolan had walked off without answering.

Now Gerald Ashworth sat beside me with his hands folded on his knee and watched the dark shore road go by.

Preston drove.

He hummed.

I kept my eyes on the window and thought about a thick double stroke on the crossbar of a T.

I had looked at that signature for two years.

I had never once asked how it got there.

At the house I didn't go to my wing.

I walked straight through the hall to the morning room, where a lamp was already lit.

My mother sat at the little table in her cardigan and pearls, with a pot of tea in front of her.

She had not been to bed.

"Camille, darling," Lucille said. "You're soaked. Come and sit."

"Did you pour the tea?"

She stopped with the pot in the air.

"I don't know what you mean."

"The day Nolan signed. He says you poured the tea while Father held out a single page."

"Camille."

"He says you told him he was doing something wonderful."

My mother set the pot down very carefully.

Her hand shook, and a little tea ran over onto the saucer.

"Your father said you would die if you had another shock," she said.

"Answer me."

"I did pour it."

The lamp hummed.

"You knew the page was empty."

"I knew it was only a page for a signature." She didn't look at me. "I didn't know what he would type above it. I told myself he wouldn't type anything."

"Then you saw the paper he showed me."

"Two years ago, yes."

"You knew I'd got my memory back."

"I saw you cut those roses and smell them, and I saw your face." Her mouth trembled. "I thought, she remembers, and she's decided to stay quiet, and I'd better do the same."
