Chapter 10: The Roof
I turned off the hose.
The water ran down the new drain in a slow gurgle. It was the only sound in the building.
"Tell them what I was to you," I said.
"I mean it, Maur."
"So do I. Go ahead."
He blinked.
"Tell them," I said. "Post it. Call a reporter. Tell them I was your girlfriend for three years. Tell them all of it."
"That's not..."
"Tell them you were sleeping with me on Thursdays and bringing her flowers on Fridays."
He flinched.
"Tell them she was married to another man the entire time," I said. "Tell them you asked me to give her my dog. And then tell them she let that dog sit in the rain while she tried on rings you paid for."
I coiled the hose over my arm.
"Go on. Which part do you want to start with?"
He opened his mouth.
He closed it.
The veteran's truck had gone. Kerry had taken Biscuit home. It was just me, Ronan, and four dogs watching him through chain-link.
He looked at the floor.
"I wasn't going to," he said at last. "I just wanted you to stop."
"I know."
"You know?"
"You've never told anyone anything about me in your life. You weren't going to start on the internet."
He laughed, once, and it came out broken.
He sat down on the bottom step of the steel stairs and put his face in his hands.
I'd seen him like that once before.
Twenty-two years old, on his bedroom floor, with the blinds closed for a month.
I hadn't known what to do then either. So I'd sat down next to him and stayed.
I didn't sit down.
