Chapter 18: Ronan at the Door
Ronan closed the laptop.
The banners vanished off the wall. The screen went blue.
Nobody in the glass room moved.
Outside it, the girl at the front desk had put her phone face down and was staring at her keyboard.
"Ronan," the older investor said.
Ronan stood up.
He walked out of the conference room, through the long office, past thirty desks and thirty faces.
He didn't take his coat.
The glass door with his name on it swung shut behind him.
The older investor looked at the closed laptop, then at me.
"Fourteen thousand four hundred," he said.
"Eight months. Eighteen hundred a month."
He took a pen out of his vest and wrote it on the back of his agenda.
"Thank you, Ms. Costigan."
I walked back out past the front desk.
The girl didn't look up.
For thirteen days, Ronan Fahey didn't call me.
I found a lawyer on Dorchester Avenue, a woman with reading glasses on a chain who'd done my mother's will. She read Kiera's complaint at her kitchen table and laughed out loud at count two.
