Chapter 23: Backups
"No," I said. "It isn't saved anywhere."
Sallie set the lost-and-found box down on the bar.
"The woman in the hoodie," she said. "She tipped eighty-eight dollars on a twelve-dollar drink."
"She wasn't tipping," I said. "She was paying for the phone."
Lawton was still on his knees beside me on the rubber mat.
Then his head came up.
"Clancy," he said.
"Clancy's asleep on his boat."
"Clancy filmed it." He grabbed my arm. "At the marina. He ran to the fuel dock. He said he got the boat's name and the numbers."
I had heard Clancy say it.
I'd been holding Lawton's shirt in my fist at the time, and I'd forgotten every word.
We ran down the dock in the dark, Lawton half a step ahead with his hand out behind him.
Clancy's charter boat was tied at the end.
Lawton jumped down onto the deck and banged on the cabin door.
Clancy came out in boxer shorts and a rain jacket, with his hair flat on one side.
"Who's dead?"
"Nobody," I said. "Your phone. From Nassau. Where is it?"
