Chapter 13: The Troopers' Soup
Rhys did not kneel.
He stood on the wall beside Maxine with his hands open at his sides.
Below them, six men stood in the yard in a ragged line, and none of them bent a knee.
"No," Rhys said.
"As you like," said the High Marshal.
He pressed the first key with his thumb.
Rhys's hand flew to the back of his left ear.
His knees folded, and he hit the steel with his whole weight.
His lips went grey.
"Four seconds!" Isak shouted from the yard, his voice cracking. "Maxine, it's a live circuit. Cold water, now!"
One.
She dropped beside Rhys and slapped her right palm over the lump behind his ear.
Two.
Water poured from her hand and ran down his neck, and nothing happened.
Three.
She poured until her whole arm shook and the water ran fast and hard.
The lump sparked blue, once, and died with a small crack.
Rhys dragged in a breath.
"I'm here," he said hoarsely. "Maxine, I'm here. The others."
