Chapter 22: Founder's Day

The Sky Hall was hung with gold banners for Founder's Day. HANSEONG. SIXTY YEARS.

Six hundred guests. Every camera in Seoul.

Uncle Myung-ho stood at the podium in a black suit with a white mourning ribbon on his lapel, for the hill.

"Sixty years ago," he was saying, "my father founded this company on trust."

The doors at the back of the hall opened.

Ji-an pushed her grandfather's wheelchair through them.

He was in his best grey suit, with a blanket over his knees he had refused three times in the car. His cane was across his lap.

Ji-an's mother walked beside them in navy and pearls. Tae-gyeom walked behind.

So-hee came last, with a laptop under her arm and a lemon candy in her cheek.

Six hundred heads turned.

Myung-ho stopped speaking.

Ji-an pushed the chair all the way down the centre aisle, through the round tables, to the foot of the stage.

Two staff members hurried over to help lift it up the three steps. Her grandfather waved them off.

He took his cane, put it on the floor, and stood up.

It took a long time. Nobody in that room breathed.

He climbed the three steps on his own with one hand on Ji-an's arm.

At the top he looked at his son.

"Move," he said.

Myung-ho moved.

Her grandfather didn't take the podium. He held out his hand to Ji-an, and she put the microphone in it.
