Chapter 13: The Smooth Shaft
For the length of a held breath, nobody in the Hall of Wounds made a sound.
Then forty elders spoke at once, and Cen's voice came down over all of them.
"A Yan trick!"
He strode to the altar, and his gold scale rang.
"Yan craftsmen can leave off a notch as easily as they cut one.
The tribute has smelled the verdict and he is lying to save his neck."
"I have never lied about an arrow," Jiang said.
"I told your prince to his face that I'd shoot him again."
"Then swear."
"I'll swear it was not mine."
Cen looked at the black shaft on its silk.
Jiang saw a flash of fear cross his face, the kind he had seen on men in a collapsing line.
Cen seized the arrow with both fists and brought it down across his knee.
It cracked in two.
The sound went through the hall.
"There is your proof," Cen said, and flung the halves at Jiang's feet.
"Plain wood.
Let the Council see what a Yan dog's word is worth."
An old elder in the front row rose with his mouth open.
The relic of the blood royal lay broken on the floor, and the Marshal who had guarded it for a year had broken it himself.
Jiang did not stoop for it.
"Your Highness," he said, "there are two arrows in a box on red silk in your study.
