He left Mummu's sauna before it was light, on foot, and I let him go without a word.
At eight Solange called the farmhouse on the kitchen phone.
"The Board sits at nine," she said. "He asked. You don't have to come."
I put on my good coat and went.
The plows had opened the road by morning, and the Dry was packed to the walls.
Mummu came with me and stood at my elbow in the doorway, and we were not on the Board, either of us.
Nobody seemed to know where Finns stood who had no hook.
Petroc saw me from the head of the hall.
He crossed the floor through the crowd and stopped in front of me.
He took my wrist.
It was the same wrist, in the same doorway, and the same hand.
His fingers closed on it gently, with his thumb pressed on the inside where my pulse beat.
