Chapter 8: Marja's POV

Marja's POV

I put my brother's bent check on the kitchen table between the salt and the lamp.

Petroc came in from the plow with snow on his shoulders and stopped when he saw it.

I had been looking at it for an hour.

It was number one hundred and seventeen, folded nearly in half, with a dent where a hammer had come down.

"Where did you get that?" he said.

"Toivo left it on our porch rail, the first night."

"It's from the Box," Petroc said. "Solange has the only key."

"Then ask Solange who opened it." I picked it up. "I don't think she'll tell you."

He took off his gloves one finger at a time.

"What do you want, Marja?"

"I want to know why you broke it."

"You know why," he said.

"I know what Madern's son said. Tell me what you said."

He put his gloves on the counter.

"A boy of twenty-one went through a plate-glass window at the rink," he said. "He needed eighty stitches. Your brother put him there. The law says a wolf who spills pack blood on a human floor is bent."

"And did you ask him why?"

Petroc stared at me.

"A Cap'n doesn't ask."

"Why not?"

"Because every wolf in the Dry has a reason, and every reason is a good one to the wolf who has it." His voice was level. "If I listened to them, there would be no law."

"My brother is twenty-six years old," I said. "Two winters ago he was twenty-four, and he went out into January with a coat and a truck he had to sell for gas."

"I did what the law says."

"You did what you felt like."

His face went hard.

"Say that again."

"He hit that boy because the boy put his hand on a girl at the chapel steps. She was fifteen. She told her mother, and her mother told Mummu, and Mummu told you."
