Chapter 15: Caspian's POV

Caspian's POV

I sat in my study that night with a lamp and a letter I did not want to open.

It had come an hour after the hall, delivered by a northern rider who would not meet my eyes.

The wax was a stag's head.

It was the elder's seal, and the rider said it had been sent before the hall, to be delivered if the elder lost his seat.

I broke it.

Three northern Alphas named a challenger for the Ironcrest chair.

The ring would be held in the quarry yard in three days, and the heir would meet him there or lose the pack.

I read it twice and put it face down.

A knock came at the door, soft and unhurried.

I knew the knock.

I knew everything about her now, and it was a new kind of pain, because she was real.

"Come in," I said.

Sorcha came in barefoot in a borrowed nightshirt, with her dark hair loose.

She looked at the letter, and then at me.

"It's the elder," she said.

"Yes."

"What does he want?"

"A fight. Three days." I turned the page over so she could read it. "His man is called the Stonegate Alpha, and he has not lost in nine years."

She read it standing.

Her face did not change.

"Good," she said.

"Sorcha."

"I want the pack. I want it in front of everyone who watched my father die and said nothing."

"You've been starved for three years and dosed with wolfsbane every morning."
