Chapter 21: Who Picks Her Up

"Where is he now?"

"He left. He smiled and said it was a mix-up. He left her a lollipop." The teacher paused. "I didn't let her have it."

"I'm coming."

I ran.

I didn't take my coat. I ran the six blocks up Savin Hill Avenue in my slippers with a tape measure still around my neck.

The preschool was in the basement of the parish hall, with paper turkeys taped to the windows.

The teacher met me at the door.

Nessa was sitting at a little table in the hallway with a glue stick, completely fine.

She looked up.

"Orla! I made you a turkey. It's got your hair."

It was a handprint turkey with red yarn glued on top.

I knelt on the linoleum and held her so hard she squeaked.

"You're squishing the turkey."

"Sorry."

"A man said he was my uncle," she told me, very seriously. "But he wasn't Uncle Cormac. So I didn't go. I'm not allowed to go with men."

"No, you're not."

"Miss said no to him. She said it really loud."

I looked up at the teacher over Nessa's curls.

"Thank you," I said.

"He wasn't on the list," she said again.

I'd told him not to come to my door.

I called him.

"Nessa's preschool," I said when he answered. "Savin Hill Avenue. Senan came to take her. She's fine. Come."
