Chapter 13: The Church Fund
The pastor called my hotel phone at seven the next morning.
I almost did not answer it, because I had stopped answering anything with my mother's church on the other end.
"Tanner," he said, and his voice sounded as if he had not slept. "I would like you to come to the church tonight."
"Why?"
"Because the bag your mother paid Kyle's bail with is ours."
"I know."
"Then you know I cannot say it to her alone."
I stood at the window of the suite and watched the river.
Lana sat on the bed with a coffee, listening, and she raised one eyebrow at me.
"I'm not paying it back," I said. "I want that clear before I come."
"I am not asking you to pay anything," the pastor said. "I am asking you to hear it."
That was a different man from the one who had told me to pray in a laundromat.
"Seven o'clock," I said.
The church was a low brick building on Linden Street with a gravel lot and a sign that said, "Wednesday Supper, All Welcome."
