Chapter 15: The Gate
My father did not move in that night, because I put him in a motel on Troy Street and paid for one week.
I paid the clerk myself, in front of him, so he could watch me count it.
The next morning I took Lana to see the house.
The lawyer had closed on it in three days, in cash, from an estate.
It sat at the top of a hill in Oakwood, behind a stone wall and a black iron gate.
The lawn went on.
Lana stood in the circular drive with her hands in the pockets of the gray coat.
"It has a driveway with a name," she said.
"I think it's called a motor court."
"It has more bathrooms than my apartment has doors."
"Eight."
"Stop talking."
I laughed, and she looked at me sideways.
"You laugh different now," she said.
"Different how?"
"Like it doesn't cost you anything."
I took her through every room.
She ran her fingers along the marble in the kitchen.
In the long hall upstairs, with the winter light coming through three tall windows, she stopped at the last door.
