Chapter 17: Offer
The lawyer answered on the second ring, at ten o'clock on a Saturday night, and she did not sound surprised.
"The sale has not closed," she said. "Shelby's cousin signed an agreement. He has not yet paid."
"Can I pay first?"
"You can pay more. That is what first means."
"Call the owner," I said. "Tell him I'll see him tomorrow."
The owner of the Gas-N-Go lived in a brick ranch house in Beavercreek.
It had a plastic deer on the lawn and a screen door that squealed.
He was seventy, bald, in a cardigan, and he met us on the porch at nine on Sunday morning with his arms crossed.
Lana stood beside me in the gray coat.
"You'll be wanting to buy me out," he said. "Everybody does, this week."
"I do."
"I've got a signed deal with a nice young man."
"Does the nice young man have cash?"
"He has a bank letter."
The lawyer opened her folder and laid a cashier's check on the porch rail.
It was larger than the bank letter by a number I will not repeat.
The old man looked at the check for a long time.
"It's a gas station," he said. "It doesn't make that much."
"It's a corner," I said. "I'm buying the corner."
