Chapter 23: The Rent
"Stay where?" I asked.
My mother looked up from the doormat.
"Here. The house. A room. The back bedroom, the one with the cot."
"Why would I give you a room in a house I just bought?"
"Because I'm your mother."
I let the words sit on the porch between us.
The church ladies on the sidewalk had stopped pretending not to listen.
"I'll tell you what it costs," I said. "Then you decide."
Her chin came up, a little, out of habit.
"The house is mine. A room in it has a rent. The rent is a job."
"What job?"
"The night counter at the Gas-N-Go on Dorothy Lane. Ten at night to six in the morning. Five nights a week."
She stared at me.
"A gas station."
"Lana owns it. She is your boss. She decides if you keep the shift."
"That is a clerk's job."
"It is the job I worked for nine years, washing dishes at night after my first one," I said.
"Your pay goes to the trust, every check. It goes to the nine years."
"Nine years is two hundred thousand dollars!"
