Chapter 14: Eleven People

The scene was the Earl in his study, receiving the news that the will had gone missing.

It was one page, one chair, and one window with fake rain running down it from a hose.

Dorian had spent the morning telling the crew he would be terrible.

Nobody believed him.

"Take one," said Vera.

The Earl sat in the chair.

He lifted his left hand to the height of his ear and raised his chin.

He waited for so long that a lighting technician coughed.

Then he delivered the news in a booming voice, with a catch in it, and wept.

"Cut," said Vera.

She did not look at Dorian.

She looked at Kit, who was standing behind the monitor because the brother had a line in the next scene and nowhere better to be.

"That was a parody," said Kit.

"I beg your pardon," said Dorian.

"You've done an enormous gate. It's your gate at three times the size. A bad actor doesn't know he has one."

"I have been told," said Dorian, "that I am very bad."

"By whom?"

"By the entire monitor, silently."
