Chapter 24: Five Films
On the Sunday that episode eight went out, Dorian arrived at the flat in Walthamstow.
He brought a bottle of wine, a bag of biscuits for Fenella, and the binder.
"I'd like you to have a go at it," he said.
"At what?" said Kit.
"With a pen."
He held it out with both hands.
It was thick with five years of printed paper, with plain gold stars and brass dots and nine stars that said SUPER! in curly type.
It smelt faintly of the guesthouse.
Kit took it, and found he was holding it very carefully.
He sat down at the table, uncapped the red pen, and opened it at the first review.
It was the one about the first film, with the gold tab on its edge and the second paragraph in the middle of the page.
He read the sentence about the stillness.
It was a single clause.
He wrote it in the margin, in his small upright hand.
That was the best thing in the film. I should have given it a paragraph.
He turned the page.
There was the shoulder in the second film, which he had called a flaw.
