Chapter 8: Whom

Kit opened the door with a red pen in his fist.

The star of Hollowmere was kneeling on the carpet outside it in his socks.

"I live here," said Dorian.

"That is to say, I don't. I was passing."

"On your knees," said Kit.

"I dropped my pen."

It was in his hand.

They both looked at it.

"Get up," said Kit.

"You're coming with me."

He did not wait to see whether Dorian followed.

He walked down the corridor to the star's door, which was the largest and had a brass number on it.

He went in and switched on the light.

Dorian came in behind him and shut the door gently, because other actors were asleep on the landing.

"You've read it," he said.

"I've read it," said Kit.

"It's a little over two hundred, and I've marked every line."

The page was in Kit's hand, covered in red.

Dorian took it and stood under the lamp in his socks and read every mark.

At the top Kit had written: Not bad.

Below it, circled twice, was the word lies.

"'Kit looks at the Earl's hands whenever the brother lies,'" Dorian read.

"That's wrong?" said Dorian.

"It's the wrong verb."

"You said it was good."

"I said it was not bad," said Kit.

"It isn't 'lies'. It's 'is afraid'."

"What's the difference?"

"He doesn't look at your hands when he lies, because he's good at lying," said Kit.

"He looks at them when he's afraid you've seen it."

"Seen what?" said Dorian.

"Whatever he's lying about."

Dorian read the sentence aloud again, with the right word, and nodded.

"Next."

"The mouth," said Kit, pointing at the page with the pen.
