Chapter 18: Dennis Walks

We got to the loft at ten to midnight with Isla's shoes in her hand.

The steel door was propped open, and every light in the place was on.

Dennis stood at the kitchen counter in his charcoal blazer with a printer humming at his elbow.

Beside him were the sponsor's producer, a thin man with a lanyard, and the boy from the agency in his headset.

A locksmith sat on the floor by the prompter case with the lock half off.

The prompter stood in the middle of the room under its cloth.

The stapled pages I had set on its stand were still there, a white edge showing under the cloth.

The crew had gathered at the far end, thirty people with their arms folded.

"Jasper," said Dennis. "How nice. We're doing a tech run."

"At midnight."

"The sponsor has a very tight window." He lifted a sheet from the printer. "We've made some small improvements to the closing. A few lines more aligned with the brand."

"You've rewritten the finale."

"We've tightened it."

The producer looked uneasy.

"Mr. Crane said the director had signed off," he said.

"I'm the director," I said. "I haven't signed off on anything."

"You resigned."

"I resigned from the company. I didn't take the script back." I walked to the prompter and put my hand on the cloth. "This is my file. Pages one to twelve."

"Pages one to eleven were approved," Dennis said. "Page twelve is an unreviewed addition, and I'd like to see it before four million people do."

"You can't."

"I can, because I own the stand it's sitting on."

He nodded at the locksmith.

"Open it."

The locksmith picked up a screwdriver.

"Don't," said the grip with the huge forearms.

He had stepped out of the line.

He was not a loud man, and he did not raise his voice now.

"I run the prompter," he said. "I've run it for three years. The file's passcoded, and I'm the only one who knows the code. That's how Jas set it up. Nobody opens the file but the operator."
