Chapter 5: Wyatt at the Box Office
On Thursday the queue for Casablanca ran out the door and down the street.
Sixty people stood under umbrellas, holding paper tickets Isla had torn by hand.
I was carrying a stool across the foyer when the door opened and Wyatt walked in with a suitcase.
He had the same grin he wore on camera, wide and open and a little sheepish.
He saw me and spread his arms.
"There he is!"
"Don't," I said.
He hugged me anyway, hard, with the suitcase handle between us.
He smelled like airplane and expensive soap.
"You look terrible, man. You look like a guy who lives in a cinema."
"I do live in a cinema."
"Excuse me," said a girl in the queue. "Are you Wyatt? From Demi and Wyatt?"
He turned around, and I watched his face change.
It was the face from the videos, lit from the inside.
"Guilty," he said.
The queue made a sound.
Phones came out all down the line, and the girl was already asking for a picture.
"Four million!" someone shouted. "Where's Demi?"
"Home," Wyatt said. "She says hi. She'd have come, but she's got the big day to plan."
I stood with the stool in my arms and listened to him sell it.
He had never needed a script for that part.
He took the selfie, and another, and then another with his arm around the girl, and a woman in the line said, "I can't believe you're real," and he said, "I get that a lot."
Then he turned back to me and the smile dropped.
"Where is it?"
"Where's what?"
"Don't, Jas. The drive. I've got a car outside with the meter running. Dennis is going to eat me alive."
