Chapter 15: What I Would Leave

Corwin's POV

My father had come down to the cells once, and he had hated every step of it.

He stood at the bars with the silver wolf pinned to his collar, and he looked at the cot and the blanket and my wife.

"Send her upstairs," he said. "This is between a father and his heir."

"She stays," I said.

"She is not a member of this house."

"She is married to me."

"For eighteen more nights."

Aveline did not move from the bars.

She had her hand on the stone next to them, and I watched her fingers go white against it.

"Here is what I am offering, Corwin," my father said. "Verity Ravensdale takes the Tether at the Moon Stone, and your wolf is bound to a Luna the Crown has chosen."

"I know the offer."

"You will also be King after me. Piers goes back to his films, and the river girl goes home with her deeds."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then you go feral at the full moon, and I sign the order myself."

He said it plainly, as he said everything.

I had sat across a table from that voice for thirty-two years, and I had never once said no to it.

I stood up from the cot.

"No," I said.

My father waited.

"I won't take her. I won't take the crown on those terms, and I won't take the throne at all if the price is a woman who calls me a monster in front of five hundred people and asks the guards to put silver in me."
