Chapter 23: Two Models, One Itinerary

The carriage on the Dunmere dock was loaded so high that the horses looked worried.

Piers stood beside it in a plain wool coat, carrying two bags in each hand and a hatbox under his arm.

Tilda sat on the carriage step with her unbuttoned coat and a pastry she had stolen from my father's kitchen.

"You're late," she called, when Corwin and I came up the bank. "Did you drown?"

"We were busy."

"Gross. Good for you."

I sat down beside her, and Corwin went to help Piers with the bags.

He took one look at the hatbox and took that too.

"Tell me everything," I said.

"Piers has been busy as well." Tilda chewed. "Last night he went down to the east wing cells and told his father no through the bars, while the old man was in his socks."

"I didn't know that."

"And this morning he gave away his shares in Aldenmoor House."

I stared at her.

"All of them?"

"To the river packs. Dunmere has a stake in a luxury label now, and your father is on its board." She grinned. "He's already asked if they can do a line in sensible boots."

I laughed until I had to wipe my eyes.

Piers set the last bag down and came over, dusting his hands on his coat.

He stopped in front of Tilda, not too close.

"I resigned the heir-presumptive," he said. "I've told the studio I'm not doing the film. I've sold the house in the city to pay off the premiere."

"Is that all?"

"No. I wrote down what I did." He held out a folded sheet of paper. "The dinner, the photograph, and the three weeks I let you think I was at a script reading. Everything. I wanted you to have it in my own hand."
