Chapter 16: The Flyers

Under the headline there was a photo of me and a man.

It was Brock's picture, taken through our kitchen window, with me on the counter and my legs around somebody's waist.

The somebody had been cropped to a shoulder, a sandy-brown head and a silver ring.

Beneath it, in smaller type: Ask her which grad student's grade she's getting. Linden Street knows.

The room had gone so quiet that I could hear the radiator ticking.

A guy two rows down held up his copy and whispered something to the girl beside him.

She whispered back, and she didn't look at me.

Two hundred people, and every one of them had my face in their hands.

I stood in the aisle with my backpack straps cutting into my shoulders.

The TA at the front pretended to read the board.

I could have run.

I could have cried in the bathroom.

Instead I folded the flyer in half, then in half again, and put it in my jacket pocket.

"For the record," I said, to nobody, to everybody, "I'm not in this class for the grades."
