"Get up," I said.
Danielle stayed on her knees on my welcome mat.
"My roommates changed the locks," she said.
"The sorority took my pin, and my mother won't answer, and the dean emailed me at six to come in on Monday."
"I'll tell everyone what you want, I'll say it was only Brock, just don't let me be alone tonight."
Jude stood behind me in a towel, very still.
I could feel him not speaking.
He had spent a week letting me lead, and I understood that this was the hardest part of it for him.
"Get up," I said again, "and come in, because you'll catch cold."
She rose on shaking legs.
I led her to the kitchen and sat her in a chair that was not mine.
I put the kettle on, because my grandmother always did, and I sat across from her.
"You asked me for help," I said.
