In Bed With My Ex's Brother-in-Law novel · Chapter 28 of 32

Chapter 28: Laramie

"Me?" I said again.

"You," Kacey said. "He'll want to carry every box himself and then stand in the parking lot looking sad. You'll let me cry at a gas station."

Rance opened his mouth.

"She's right," Gran said, and passed him the potatoes.

We left in the second week of January, at five in the morning.

We took the green Ford I'd bought off the old rancher with colt money.

Kacey's whole life was in the bed under a tarp.

Two duffel bags. A box of textbooks. A coffee maker.

A lamp shaped like a horse that the Bridger boys had given her as a joke. She'd cried over it anyway.

It was nine below at the Bridger cattle guard.

Gran stood on the porch in her robe and her shotgun and watched us go.

By South Pass the sun was up and the whole world was white and gold.

Kacey had her boots on the dash and a gas-station burrito in her lap.

"Okay," she said. "Story number one about my brother."

"I didn't ask for stories."

"You asked with your face." She unwrapped the burrito. "When he was fourteen, he roped a deer. On purpose. Off a pony. Dad had to cut the rope and the deer ran off with the whole loop around its neck. People in Dubois talked about that deer for two years."

I laughed so hard I had to slow down.

"Story number two."

"I'm driving."

"Story number two," Kacey said. "Six years ago, after the Lander rodeo. He came home and didn't say anything for three days. Then he asked Dad if you could buy a horse from a woman who wasn't selling one."

My hands went tight on the wheel.

"What did your dad say?"

"He said no, son, you buy the woman a cup of coffee." She looked out the window at the snow. "He never did. He watched you at every rodeo for six years like a kid outside a candy store. It was honestly embarrassing."

I didn't say anything for a mile.

"Story number three," she said, softer.
