Chapter 20: Fire

I dropped.

Straight down, flat on the sawdust, before I'd thought about it.

Something swept through the air where my head had been.

A hand. It closed on nothing.

"There you are," Wendell said softly. "No. There you aren't."

I lay with my cheek on the floor and didn't breathe.

He was standing over me.

I could hear his good watch ticking.

He breathed in, long and slow.

"You smell like him now," he said to the dark. "Did you know that? It's all over town. The wolfless girl finally smells like something."

I didn't move.

"Problem is," he said, "so does this whole building."

He laughed under his breath.

Judd was bleeding somewhere near the far door.

The mill stank of him. His blood, his fur, his fight, all over the sawdust and the walls.

To Wendell's nose, I was one more breath of Judd in a room full of Judd.

He couldn't pick me out of it.

He was as blind as I'd always been invisible.

"Liesel." His voice moved away from me, toward the saw. "Let's be reasonable. You've got pictures. I've got the man you love bleeding on my floor. I'm sure there's a deal in there somewhere."
