Chapter 26: In the Dark Hall
The hall began to mutter.
It started at the back, on the lawn, and came forward.
Criminal.
Her own brother.
Ket's chains clinked beside me.
"Oh, he's good," she said under her breath. "I hate how good he is."
Wendell spread his hands at the crowd, sorrowful, patient.
"I'm not saying she's lying," he said. "I'm saying our law can't hear her."
"Then hear me."
My mother stood up from the bench at the side of the stage.
The muttering stopped.
She walked to the front of the stage in her camel coat and stood beside the oak chair, close enough to touch it.
She didn't look at Wendell.
She looked at the hall.
"I'm the Luna of Black Mountain," she said. "Nobody here has mated anybody they shouldn't. My word is lawful. So listen to it."
Wendell's smile stayed exactly where it was.
"Aunt Regina, you're upset..."
"Sit down, Wendell," my mother said.
He didn't sit.
But he stopped talking.
She told them.
She named every piece of it in her own voice, and not one wolf looked away from her.
