Chapter 4: The Badge

On Monday morning I walked into the Fieldwork atrium at nine with a visitor sticker on my blouse.

The day guard printed it for me without a word.

Two hundred employees were crowded under the skylight for the first all-hands since the bell, and a cake the size of a door sat on a table by the stairs.

It said FLDW in blue icing.

Tim stood on the mezzanine landing with a microphone.

Sienna stood one step below him in a cream dress that showed what the cardigans had been hiding.

I stopped at the back, near the coffee station, and nobody noticed me for almost a minute.

"We built this from a garage," Tim was saying. "Nine years. A lot of you were there for the hard parts, and I'll never forget it."

People clapped.

He was good at this.

He had always been good at this, and I had always been the one who stayed up fixing the thing he had just promised the room.

"Before the toast," he said, "I want to say something about family."

He reached down and took Sienna's hand.

A few people said aww.

A few people looked at their shoes, because they had been on that roof.

"I also want to say that Hannah Brecker has decided to leave us," Tim said. "She has been under a lot of strain. After Thursday night, the board and I agree it's best for everyone if she moves on, effective immediately, for conduct."

Two hundred people heard the word conduct and went quiet.

Then someone at the back turned around and saw me.
