Chapter 6: Seventy-Two Hours
The apartment in Fort Greene had taken four years to fill, and it took one Saturday to empty my half of it.
Maggie came at eight with a roll of tape, a borrowed van, and two off-duty nurses.
They carried boxes down three flights without being asked and left with a pie.
I packed the way I wrote code.
One room at a time, one decision at a time, no feelings until the last box.
The kitchen was where the plan broke.
On the counter by the kettle stood the wooden spoon Tim used for pasta, and a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST CEO, which I had given him on his birthday.
I put the mug in the trash.
I kept the spoon, because it was mine.
"You haven't cried once," Maggie said from the doorway.
"I'm busy."
"You've been breathing through your nose for two hours."
"It's called controlling myself."
"It's called a patient I'm going to have to treat later."
The buzzer went at noon.
I expected the landlord, or Tim, or a lawyer in a raincoat.
On the video screen was a small woman in a green cardigan with reading glasses on a chain, holding a foil-covered dish in both hands.
"Hannah, honey," Dorothy said. "It's me. Let me up. I brought lasagna, and I don't know what else to do."
Dorothy Corbin had been a school secretary in Queens for thirty-one years.
She had taught me how to roast a chicken.
She had taught me to tell when a fight with her son was about the fight and when it wasn't.
She came up the stairs slowly and put the dish on the counter.
Then she turned around and took my face in both hands.
"I didn't know," she said. "I swear on his father's grave, I did not know."
