Chapter 23: Morning Light
I woke with the sun on my eyelids and my husband's hand between my legs.
It wasn't doing anything.
It lay there, warm and heavy and possessive, with the fingers curled and still.
The suite blazed with light.
The curtains were open, and November had come in over the square, clear and bright, and the sheets glowed white.
His phone buzzed on the nightstand.
He reached for it without opening his eyes and held it up where I could read it.
Abel.
Mr. Crowninshield's lawyer has called to say he is retiring.
The man with the ring is at the police station on Race Street, asking to talk.
Nobody is coming for you, sir. Breakfast is on the way.
I read it twice.
I took the phone out of his hand and set it face down on the nightstand.
"Nobody's coming," I said.
"No."
"It's the first of November."
"It is."
"You're alive."
"So I'm told."
I rolled over, and his hand slid with me, and I climbed onto his stomach and sat.
He opened his eyes.
They were green as new leaves in the sun, and the lashes were gold at the tips.
There was a crease from the pillow on his cheek.
