Chapter 13: Declined

I did not knock.

Dashiell was standing at the window with his back to the door, and he turned when he heard the pages hit his desk.

"Read the last line," I said.

He read it.

I watched the color leave his face, and I thought: so it's true.

"Where did you get this?"

"A courier from Vane Freight left it on my keyboard. It has my name on it, Dashiell. It says delivered."

"Wynne."

"Price paid in full. Did you pay it?"

"No."

"Then why does a woman who smiled at me every Sunday for two years think I'm yours?"

He crossed the room to the wall behind his desk and swung a framed chart aside.

There was a safe behind it.

He opened it with his thumb and took out three cream pages and put them on top of mine.

They were the same pages, with the same crest.

Across the bottom, in black ink, he had written a single word and pressed it so hard the pen had torn the paper.

Declined.

"This came four months ago," he said. "I sent it back the same day. She answered with an invitation to your engagement party and put my name on it as guest of honor."

"Why did you go?"

"To refuse her to her face. I wanted her to hear me say it before two hundred wolves."

"And you didn't."

"I saw you walk out onto that lawn."

He said it flatly, but his hand had closed on the edge of the safe.

"I knew who you were from the paper. I did not know that you'd stand there while he said it, and not cry, and then put the pin in his drink."

I remembered the pin, and the cold glass, and nobody breathing.

"I wasn't going to take a girl who had just been handed to me," he said. "Then you came out the garden gate by yourself."
