Chapter 15: Brent
Brent Sayer lived in a studio on Delancey Street that Victor Langhorn paid for.
I knew because I had helped him carry the couch up.
I knocked at noon with the burner in my jacket pocket and the recorder already running.
He opened the door in sweatpants and a shirt he had slept in.
His eyes were swollen.
His bright easy smile was nowhere on his face.
"Mason," he said. "I'm not allowed to talk to you."
"Then don't talk. Listen."
He stood aside.
The studio had a bed, a coat rack, and a row of shoes lined up.
A suitcase lay open on the floor, half packed.
"They're moving me out," Brent said. "A man called an hour ago. The lease ends Friday."
"Victor."
"His lawyer. They said I embarrassed the firm."
"You embarrassed yourself in front of fifty people."
"I know."
He sat on the edge of the bed.
I stayed standing.
"I was your friend for two years," I said. "You slept on my couch while I walked three campaigns a month."
