Chapter 16: The Vote
We filled the lobby of Strahan Tower on Wednesday morning.
Forty ironworkers in work boots on the white marble, under the chandelier, with our hard hats under our arms.
My partner had texted the group chat one line at six. Lobby. Nine. Wear your boots.
The security guard at the desk looked at us, then at the ceiling, and decided he'd never seen anything.
The board was meeting forty-one floors above our heads.
I stood by the elevators with my gang.
I hadn't spoken to Anson since the deck.
He'd walked in at a quarter to nine through the revolving door, in a dark suit, without the hard hat.
Forty ironworkers had gone quiet for him.
He'd stopped in front of me.
"You didn't have to come," he said.
"It's my tower too. I've got two thousand bolts in it."
He'd almost smiled.
Then the elevator took him up.
The old connector sat on the edge of a marble planter with his bad knees out in front of him.
The apprentice ate a breakfast sandwich in four bites.
"What happens if he loses?" the apprentice said.
"Then we find out what Hayden's made of," my partner said.
"We know what he's made of," the old connector said. "We've seen him on a plank."
At ten-fifty the elevator chimed.
Hayden walked out first.
Clean white hard hat under his arm, for the cameras outside. Two security guards. The board chair a step behind him, not turning his cufflink, not looking at anybody.
Hayden stopped in the middle of the marble and smiled at forty people in boots.
"Good morning," he said. "I'm glad you're all here. It saves me an email."
Nobody said anything.
"The board has voted four to three to remove my uncle as chief executive." He let that sit. "Effective immediately, I'm running Strahan Development."
