Chapter 17: Say It Again

He did not wait for the elevator doors to close behind us.

Harrison had me against the wall of the penthouse foyer with one hand flat beside my head, and he had not touched me yet.

"Say it again," he said.

"I'm staying."

"Again."

"I'm staying, Harrison. I'm not going anywhere."

His forehead dropped to mine.

"I thought you would go," he said. "I had the whole thing planned for the day you did."

"What was the plan?"

"I was going to stand in the doorway and say nothing."

I laughed, and it shook, and I pulled his tie loose.

"The terms say I start it," I said.

"The terms are yours."

I kissed him, slow this time, and he made a sound low in his chest that I felt through my coat.

We got to his bathroom by way of the hall, shedding things.

My dress went on the floor outside the door, and his jacket landed on the dress, and the envelope in his pocket thumped on the tile.

"Leave it," I said.

He left it.

The shower in his bathroom was a glass room the size of my old bedroom.

He turned it on and let the steam come up.

He undid the clasp of my bra with his teeth.

I put my hand flat on his chest, over a heart that was going much too fast for a man who never raised his voice.

"Lena," he said, very softly. "I've wanted you in my house since the first night you slept in the guest room."

"You said you couldn't."

"I said the terms."

I pulled him under the water with me.

It ran hot down my back, and he pressed me to the tiles.
