Chapter 23: What Camille Returned

Camille stood in the boardroom doorway with the velvet box held in both hands.

Nobody spoke.

She had not done her makeup, and her blonde hair was pulled into a knot at the back of her head.

She looked like someone I had met in a dorm hallway ten years ago.

"I'm not here to cause a scene," she said. "I'm here to give some things back."

"This is a board meeting," the chair said, not unkindly.

"It'll take two minutes."

He looked at Harrison, who nodded once.

Camille walked down the length of the table.

She stopped at the foot, where Dylan sat, and she set the velvet box in front of him.

"This is the one you bought for Lena," she said. "After the club on Saturday you put it on my hand and said I was the real one."

Dylan opened the lid.

It was a large diamond on a thin band, and the stone caught the light from the bay.

"I never wore it past the door," Camille said. "I took it off in the elevator. You can sell it. You can use it on the next girl."

"Cam."

"I'm done, Dylan. You're not a monster. You're a man who wants the person in the room to be happy with him, and I'm a person who wants to be picked, and we nearly ruined each other."

She turned away before he could answer.

Then she came around the table to me.

I stood, because it felt wrong to sit.

She reached into her coat and took out a key on a plain ring, and a folded check, and a small framed photograph.

She put the key down first.

"The apartment. I've given notice, and I paid my half through the end of the lease. You don't owe anything."
