Chapter 4: A Convenient Piece

Camille picked a café on Capitol Hill, three blocks from the apartment we used to share.

She was already at a window table when I came in, with two coffees in front of her.

One was an oat milk latte with an extra shot, which has been my order for ten years.

"I got yours," she said, and her eyes filled. "I didn't know if you'd come."

"I almost didn't," I said, and sat down.

She reached for my hand across the table, and I let her hold it for a moment before I took it back.

"Lena, I never planned this," she said. "It started in the spring. We were both so sad about how you worked all the time, and one night it just happened."

"I was working at the clinic," I said. "I was working to pay for the house."

"I know." She wiped her cheek with the heel of her hand. "I hate myself. I do."

"You're wearing my grandmother's ring."

She looked down at it.

"Dylan said it was a family piece now," she said. "He said you'd want us to have it."

"I did not say that."

"I know. I'm going to fix it. Just not today. Please, not today."

I waited for the anger to arrive, and instead I felt tired.

"You said it was about Harrison," I said.

Camille straightened up and looked over her shoulder at the door.

"Cynthia told me something," she said, lower. "Harrison's been hunting for a wife since the summer. The board votes on his chair in November, and they like a man with a family."

"Is that so."

"He's not a bad person. But he's cold, Lena. He doesn't marry anyone. He needed a wife, and you walked into the room with your heart in your hands."
