Chapter 12: The Folder
Elsie read the folder on the floor of the nursery, between the two cribs, with her back against the wall.
Darius sat on the floor across from her with his knees up and his coat off.
She had not asked him to stay, and he had not asked to.
The top wire was dated three years ago.
Fifty thousand dollars, from an account in the name of Imogen Crane, to an account for Trent Rafferty, three weeks before Elsie had ever met him.
"I met him at Imogen's birthday," Elsie said. "She introduced us. She said he was her friend from college."
"Turn the page."
The second sheet was a list.
Thirty-six wires over three years, one on the first of every month.
Every one came from I. Crane, every one went to the account of Rafferty Row, and the sum at the bottom was more than the company had ever shown in revenue.
"She paid him," Elsie said.
Her voice sounded far away.
"Every month. For three years. For the whole time we were married."
"Yes."
"He didn't marry me for the money. He didn't even want my money. She was paying him to stay."
Darius said nothing.
The last wire on the list was dated the week Trent had told her he wanted a divorce.
It was the largest of all, sixty thousand dollars, with a single word typed in the memo line.
Done.
She read it three times, and then she set it down on the carpet.
"The wedding," she said. "She was my maid of honor. She made the toast. She held my hair when I was sick at the reception."
"Elsie."
"She cut my toast into triangles."
"I know."
"No, you don't." Her voice broke. "I had one person. I had one person who knew all of it, and she was the only reason I could stand being a stranger."
