Chapter 16: Stay
Elsie pushed the double stroller through the boardroom doors in time to hear Darius say, "Yes."
Twelve heads turned.
The twins were awake and quiet, one in each side, and she had the folder under the stroller hood.
"He's telling the truth," Elsie said.
The chairman stood up halfway. "Miss Farragut, this is a closed session."
"My father owns the shares you're voting on, and I asked him to come. He'll be here in a minute."
She parked the stroller beside the empty chair and did not sit in it.
"Darius Ames stayed at my apartment last night," she said. "He was in my bed, and my children were three feet away, and I fed both of them first."
A murmur went through the room.
"I'm twenty-eight," she said. "I'm not married, and I'm not ashamed of that. But I would like to know who was watching my babies through a camera at four in the morning."
She turned to Trent.
"Imogen Crane wrote that statement," she said. "She signed it. Pauline, would you tell the board who Imogen Crane is?"
Pauline raised her head.
"A young friend of the family," she said. "A dear girl."
"Mr. Chairman, may I?"
Elsie took the folder from under the hood and walked it down the table.
She laid the papers down the table one by one.
The chairman bent over the birth record.
The director in the gray suit read it over his shoulder.
"Imogen Marie Crane," the chairman said slowly. "Mother, Pauline Marie Crane."
"Pauline told my father she had never had children," Elsie said. "She told this board the same."
"That is a private matter," Pauline said.
"It is a matter of thirty-six wire transfers," Elsie said, and set the list on top.
"And the note my father was shown is on your stationery."
"Anyone can buy paper."
"Anyone can. But Imogen has a voice, and I recorded it. Your study has a grate."
