Chapter 14: Emergency Contact

Jonas's POV

The hospital's chief executive had a view of the parking structure and a box of tissues on her desk.

I did not think the tissues were for me.

"Jonas, sit down," she said. The hospital lawyer was already in the second chair.

"I've read the motion," I said.

"Then you know what we're asking." She slid a single page across the desk. "Withdraw as a witness in the Haldorsen custody case."

"Why?"

"Because the Haldorsen Freight foundation pays for the new trauma wing, and its lawyer called me twice yesterday."

"That's the reason?"

"It is the reason I can say aloud." She folded her hands. "The other one is that you are sleeping with the mother."

"I'm not sleeping with a patient. I treated a four-year-old for a seizure. The mother is a nurse I worked beside for three years."

"The state medical board will not care about that distinction."

"Then let them come."

She looked at me for a while.

"If you testify, I will suspend your administrative duties pending review," she said. "You'll keep your shifts, but you will lose your title."

"Understood."

"Do you? The wing is forty million dollars."

"Then tell the foundation I scored it a four."

The lawyer coughed into his fist. The chief executive almost smiled, and then did not.

I left the page on her desk unsigned.

The ER was quiet at noon. I walked straight through to the records office and asked the clerk for one chart.

She did not ask whose. She had seen the same email I had.

It had come from the hospital's own compliance office, forwarded by mistake from Wyatt's lawyer's request list. It was titled CHART REQUEST: MOEN, CARISSA, ALL VISITS.

Wyatt's lawyer wanted Carissa's emergency records for his own file. He wanted proof she was really ill.

The law said I could not read them to anyone but Carissa herself.
