Chapter 13: What He Meant
I packed in the cottage with my back to the door.
My duffel took four minutes, because I owned almost nothing.
The knock came before I got the zipper closed.
"It's not locked," I said.
Boone did not come in.
He stood on the step in his jeans and his coat, with no hat and his shirt buttoned wrong.
He looked like he had run across the yard.
"I'll say it from here," he said. "You can shut the door after."
"Then say it."
"Two years ago my father died and the lawyer read the will in his office."
"Orrin was in the room, and my mother, and Dalton."
"The clause was on the second page."
"I heard it, and I thought it was the stupidest thing my father ever wrote."
"I never thought about it again."
