Chapter 17: The Deed
Boone came to the back door of the diner on Tuesday night, with snow melting on his shoulders.
Peg was at bingo.
She had left me the key and a note that said, Be nice or be quick.
I opened the door and he stood there holding a long brown envelope with both hands.
He had a week's beard and the face of a man who had not slept in it.
"I said a week," I said.
"It's been nine days."
"You counted."
"I count everything now." He held out the envelope. "I'd like to come up."
I went up the stairs ahead of him, and he followed.
The room above the diner was small, with a slanted ceiling and a twin bed, and with him in it, it was smaller.
He stood by the window and did not sit.
"This is the deed to my half of the ranch," he said. "My mother's lawyer drew it up this morning."
"Okay."
"At the Founders' Supper I'm going to sign it over to Dalton. In front of the whole county."
I stared at him.
"You're giving him the ranch."
"My half. He has the other half already, and the lender owns the paper on it."
