Chapter 19: False Alarm
The nurse strapped two belts across my belly, and the room filled with galloping horses.
Fast, strong and wet and alive.
I closed my eyes.
Boone sat on the floor beside the bed with his back against the wall and his hands hanging between his knees.
He had not said a word since the truck.
"Okay," the doctor said, reading the paper strip that came out of the machine. "Here's what happened."
"The fall bruised your hip, Miss Finch, and it set off practice contractions."
"They're called Braxton Hicks, they don't open anything, and the baby doesn't mind them."
"So the baby is fine," I said.
"Your daughter," the doctor said, and smiled. "Did you want to know?"
I opened my mouth.
Boone made a sound from the floor, a low, cracked sound, and put his face in his hands.
"I didn't know," I said. "I didn't ask."
