Chapter 12: The Night He Told Me
"Say it again," I said.
Tavish's face had gone gray under the sun.
"Hold on, little wolf," he said, hoarse. "I'm here."
The valley was silent.
"Where did you hear that?"
"I said it."
"When?"
He closed his eyes.
"On a feast hall floor," he said. "In Ashfall Ridge. In the autumn, at the Harvest Moon."
My hands slid off his face.
I sat up on the cold stone, and he sat up with me, and neither of us touched.
"You were there," I said.
"I was across the river with my wolves."
"I felt you go. Something tore in my chest like a rope breaking."
"I knew it was you, though I had never said ten words to you."
"Tavish."
"I ran. I was alone, I didn't wait for anyone."
"I went through the front doors of the feast hall and I saw you on the floor."
His voice cracked.
"I got to you. I got to your ear. I said it, and I don't know if you heard."
"I heard."
"Viggo's wolves came over me from behind. Six of them. I looked at your face until I couldn't."
I could not breathe.
"You died," I said.
"I died."
"Then how are you sitting on this rock?"
"The same way you are," he said.
"I opened my eyes at the Ashfall Rite, in the trees at the edge of the clearing."
"It was one minute before he put his hand in your hair."
The cold ran down my back.
"I knew you were the only one who might remember," he said.
"So I walked out of the trees and put my hand around his wrist."
"You didn't tell me."
"I wanted you to choose," he said.
"Not because I'd saved you. I wanted you to choose me on a bare, clean day."
