The Black Pine hall was full by nine in the morning.
I came down the stairs in a green wool dress, with my hair loose over the fresh mark on my neck.
It was a neat crescent of dark red, and I wore the collar open so everyone could see it.
Tavish walked at my side with the matching mark above his collarbone, and a slight, helpless, besotted look he could not seem to put away.
The hall went silent.
Then one of the old women at the back began to sing.
It was a low, ragged song, wordless, the song the Black Pine wolves sang over the first fire of the season.
The others took it up until the beams hummed.
At the high end of the hall stood a plain oak chair beside the Alpha's seat.
