Chapter 14: Gold Dress
My mother's gold dress had been hanging in Lester's spare closet for twelve years.
He brought it over on Friday afternoon in a dry cleaner's bag, and he held it up.
"She wore it to the pharmacy Christmas party in 1998," he said. "She danced with me, and then with the delivery boy."
"It's beautiful."
"It was a little loose on her too, if that helps."
It did not help.
On me it hung from my collarbones.
I stood in front of the mirror upstairs in my mother's room, and I looked like a candle that had been burning all night.
Lester came up behind me with a roll of fashion tape from his bathroom drawer and a face of great dignity.
"Hold still," he said.
"Where did you get that?"
"A pharmacist knows what people need before they do."
He took the dress in at the back with tape and four of my mother's own pins.
Then he zipped it, very slowly.
