Kiss Me One Last Time novel · Chapter 22 of 24
Chapter 22: Frozen
Roberta came to the rowhouse at seven the next morning, on foot.
I heard the poodle woman's voice first, sharp across the street, and then the clack of heels that had lost their rhythm.
Finley was in the kitchen with the dose chart.
He looked out the window and said, very quietly, "Don't come down."
"Help me," I said.
"Suzette."
"Help me down, Finley. I want to see her."
He carried me to the front door, and set me on my feet at the top of the stoop with his arm hard around my back.
The nurse stood behind us with her hand on the frame.
It was cold and bright.
Roberta stood on the sidewalk in the camel coat she had worn to the ballroom, creased now, with a button missing.
Her silver hair had come loose on one side.
She held her purse in both hands.
Her face, without its polish, looked ten years older.
"Suzette," she said. "Darling."
I said nothing.
"They've frozen everything. My cards, my accounts, the fund, the house. The hotel threw me out this morning."
