Chapter 11: Pack Night

"Yes," I said. "I moved into his house. I pay him two hundred dollars a month."

Rhys looked at the groceries in his hand, and some of the thunder went out of him.

"I brought stuff," he said. "You didn't have a kitchen. I was going to feed you."

"That's very sweet."

"It's eleven pounds of sausage," Rhys said bitterly. "I'm furious, and I was going to cook you eleven pounds of sausage."

Behind me, Lucian made a small choked noise that might have been a laugh.

"Do not," Rhys told him.

"I said nothing."

"You were going to."

"Rhys," I said. "Come here."

He crossed the porch in two steps and stopped in front of me, close enough that his warmth rolled over my face.

His eyes were still gold at the rims.

"I told you," I said, "that nobody decides for me."

"I know."

"I took a room. That isn't choosing anyone."

"I know." He looked past me at Lucian, and back, and his voice dropped. "It's just hard. He's got the room, and I've got a truck."

"I like your truck."

"Do you?"

"It has a working heater," I said. "It's the best thing about you."

"Ouch," said Rhys, and the corners of his mouth lifted in spite of himself.

"Come to the bonfire tonight," he said. "My pack. I want you to see where I live."

"It isn't a court, but it's loud, and nobody will care if you eat with your hands."

"Is that an invitation, or a competition?"

"It's both," Rhys said, honestly. "Is that okay?"

I looked at Lucian.

"Go," he said. He had gone cold and perfectly polite again. "It is only fair."
