Chapter 18: Joan
Eli's mother called at five on Tuesday, which she never did.
"There's a very tall young man on my porch," Joan Donnelly said.
"He's got no casserole, no flowers and no hat. He says he works with you."
Eli stopped in the middle of the studio with a sheet in his hand.
"Ma, don't let him in."
"Too late. He's in the kitchen. He's pale as a dishrag, and he took his shoes off without being asked."
She sniffed.
"I like him. Come home."
She hung up.
Eli took the train to Port Richmond with his heart beating in his teeth.
The rowhouse on Almond Street had the same green door it had always had.
He let himself in with his key and stopped in the narrow hall, where the coat hooks were.
The kitchen light was on.
He could hear Declan's voice, level and low, and no one's words but his.
"I should have knocked on this door ten years ago," Declan was saying. "I knew exactly whose it was."
Eli stood still and listened.
"That summer you were ill, and he stayed here, and he never knew who had closed the door on him."
